What is the minimum requirement for a meal? Can a loaf of bread torn to pieces and handed out be a meal? What about a shared bag of jerky or chips? What is the exact definition of a "meal" here. I love to eat and I'd be happy to be a cook, I just want to know what's really required of me to make these meals. How long does a meal last? Such as if the food made for the meal isn't eaten all at once, how long can it be stored with the effect present?

Also interested. Has this largely been a matter of opinion, or is there somewhere a guideline?

In my experience, I once received a quarter of a jelly (maybe PBJ) sandwich in a plastic bag labeled Hearty meal that was prepared by the player in game.
And if you remember Willem Rivet, at the Norhaven Crowning event there were yellow lemon cupcakes being passed around, that counted as a Meal of Visions. The player waited at least a full day before sharing any, and had local elder approval since they were store bought.

So to answer the first question, the bare minimum is a snack that would normally take two bites, and takes a few minutes to prepare. So unless you made the jerky and chips in game, or modified them in some way during the game real or roleplay wise(pending local elder approval) while using props to do so, my answer would be no.

This is based on my personal experience, if your unsure of anything talking to your local elder is always a good idea.
Personally I would like to see people actually cooking real meals like a simple bowl of grits, or thick hearty soup served in a bread bowl, maybe even a dessert tart.

Just like most potions, it can be immediately stored and used later or until end of game.
The effect holds for only one sitting, player should eat the meal in its entirety before feeling its full effects.
If player does not finish the meal, they should roleplay only feeling only slightly better.

    In the case of Grog:
1 drink usually equals 10 minutes of roleplaying being drunk
This should vary from character to character, from how much said character drank, and from how strong you wish the grog to be (ex: watered down beer vs. triple distilled liquor)

    Meal of Visions:
Baseline of 10 minutes was what I have used in the past. This can vary from character to character as well.
    (Blast that blue striped skunk)

Again I remind you to talk to your local elder whenever possible about roleplay or potential roleplay.

Cook is a tricky profession, especially since not many people take it.

In my time playing, how it normally is used is in one of three ways:

    1) food made before the event/practice that is then roleplayed being cooked or modified in game (with elder approval)

E.g. Hildegarde Beaudelaire is great at making homemade treats before a game and will role play the creation of the item in game.

    2) Food that is made on site and is later modified in some way.

e.g. A cook makes a stew or soup and adds effects as their customers ask/pay for upgrades.

    3) Make a large batch of a modified food and sell it as customers come to the place of business.

e.g. A cook makes a batch of poison drop biscuits in the camp, and sells them to the assassins guild as they obtain jobs.

I hope that clarifies the issue, Kale O'Coimin

Thank you all for your replies. I would not realistically be able to bring many cooming supplies to another colony (im planning on travelling to averen at some point) and as i am already an alchemist and enchanter, cook seemed like a logical step. I enjoy cooking greatly and would definitely be able to modify storebought food or create my own for small batches .

Well that is where "breaking bred together" comes from as a phrase. I'm not sure eating half a bagel counts as a meal for the purposes of the profession, but that is the question.

This is a great video showing how to make simple campfire breads. Which would make great "meals".
Also take a listen to what he says at the end of the video about the history of bread.

Also Murdoch please tell us about the manwichs. It must be good if Serena doesn't want us to hear it. ;)

I would be making the food for larp cook meals en masse several days before the event and cutting them into sellable plastic baggies. So realistically only a few kinds of foods would be viable. Any meals i ate at the event itself would be bought seperately to keep my immersion as high as possible, as i would only have myself and a couple of backpacks worth of stuff. Stuff such as homemade jerky, trail mix with dried fruit, nuts, and dark chocolate chunks, etc. Stuff that would keep for several days and still be good to eat.

on the "Cooking mana meat", it says just 1 regular mana potion. Does that mean the "Alchemist mana potion" that is made for 1 mat and usually gives 1 mana band?

Yes, it would mean the Mana Potion of Basic Kind. Otherwise it would specifiy "Alchemist Strong Mana Potion/Ration"
