Do you measure square/rectangular shields on a side(so a max size of 14in by 14in) or diagonally corner to corner(which gives a max size of roughly 10in by 10in)?

Corners... otherwise square shields would be an exploit in that they'd have surface area that wouldn't be counted.

It would make them mechanically superior to round shields, but doing it the other way just makes round shields superior. Six of one or a half dozen of the other I suppose.

On that topic, why limit shields based on diameter rather than surface area? It makes everything strictly inferior to round shields.

Do you really want to do the math for every single shield? It also allows for greater variation of shield types else everyone would make simple circles, squares, and rectangles to avoid doing the complex as heck math to figure out the surface area of even a basic kite.

In real life, it is more material effective to have round shields. Circles and spheres use up the most space for the least amount of material and perimeter.

Then why do other shields exist?

Same logic in our game :)

In real life the round shield is not unilaterally more effective.

Shield shape is dictated by the job the shield has to do.

Round shields can be big but you also end up with extra material and weight you have to lug, that may not be all that usefull as far as protecting you.

Big round shield are great for over lapping in a shield wall...but may not cover the lower leg well while standing...same about of weight and material does that as a kite or a scutum shape. Riot shields are usally recatgunlar even now, they do still use rounds in some places.

On horseback not all that great for using reins or covering the rein side leg...so you get the norman teardrop or the classic medieval heater shape for that job.

You do see rounds pretty much never go away, they are kinda jack of all trades shields. Kinda equall okish at everything, and often just easy to make and train people with. You don't have to learn to use the corners like on a heater or a kite for ex. Personally i don't care for rounds after they get past 18 inches. I love buckler for fun but, if i'm going to use a big shield i want corners to catch shots with and a drop point to block my legs.

See, i'm actually on the other side of the fence here - I found Round Shields FAR Superiour to Kite shields in all situations, 1v1 and Group combat.
Now, when I'm talking Round Shields, I do mean Punch Grip style, not strapped to the Arm.
The Punch Grip to me gives a supreme maneuverability compared to having it strapped to your arm - now I will add, it DOES take a bit of time to get used to it.
I can easily block a shot to my left or right and attack on the opposite side, without binding myself up in a tangle.
... I might have to do a demonstration video when I start rolling out my YouTube Larp Videos!... :D

i use almost exclusively centergrip shields no matter the shape for these same reasons Wulfric mentions. But, try reining a horse with a lance in the other hand with a ceneter gripped shield.

I've been of the opinion that center gripped is generally better on foot, and horizontally strapped is better on horseback. But it is also a matter of pesonal taste and training.

Oh yes, I will state, I fought Primarily on Foot. When I did get mounted, I still used the Round Shield, because that was what I had at the time, but I do concur with you Murdoch McArthur that Kite Shields are superior for Mounted Combat!

I didn't get to actually fight on horseback (i have fought against guy on horseback a bit..but that is a diff story) but i did get to practice at a quintain and such and with my ceneter gripped shield it was a huge pain compared to a strapped heater. If that is the shield i had when i dismounted i supposed i'd have used it but i'd prefer not to fight on foot with a strapped shield, it's better than nothing. But also remember that by the time armor gets good (late 14th century on till guns dominate), a fully armored man at arms more or less start ditching the shield esp when on foot and using poll axes or long swords etc on foot. After all they are wearing a shield already. Either way the basics of the guards and wards in i-33 or Lichtenhauer's buckler work adapt to shield work as well as look like the artwork of warriors with other shield styles that are contemporary or ealier. I think Wagner wrote an article in the first Spada anthology to that effect. Might have been Hand...i'd have to look.

Back on track... uh... Square Shields are measured Corner to Corner. I think that would be fair... Best would be a Diamond Style Shield.
