Not sure exactly where to put this, this is my best guess. Please feel free to move it someplace better.

Anyways. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to make a series of "templates" for different character concepts. A template would have a race, several professions where relevant, and all the abilities outlined up to level 15. It would also have a detailed explanation of that template's playstyle, and the reasons behind each ability chosen.

There are two purposes I can see these serving. For a newer player, it gives an idea as to what sort of abilities are most relevant to the playstyle they want to use. They can then either take those abilities verbatim, if they wish, or they can tweak it as they see fit. Or even, perhaps, take a different approach altogether! They could also serve as "quick-grab" builds for Elder teams in need of a quick NPC, builds that are easily pulled up on a smart phone if they aren't already printed out.

I would be quite happy to help work on this, and I'm sure there are plenty of other people who have ideas for these as well. But is it a good idea?

the only thing about "templates" is the fact that most newer players will think they are the end all be all. saw it happen too many times with basic D&D modules when they would make pregenerated characters. its a good idea for elders to make up quick enemies, but sometimes the joy is walking your character through from a bud of an idea until it blooms into the finished character....mind you this is just my opinion

As a d&d player myself I kind of agree with Grath. However I don't think it would be out of place to write into a race/class what skills they'd be most and least likely to use.

Say that I submit and have a race of fire elves approved. I don't think it would be out of place to have something along the lines of "Recomended skills: Fire magic and Mana bands. Unrecomended skills: Water/Earth magic and shields."

No I agree with you about not listing an exact character build. But racial/class suggestions would be alright. At least I think so.

if it is written as a "sample" and such with clearly defined wording...

but it would be better to write the guides as we are doing in the university training for character creation. Really the options are so open we need samples of "this is good" and "this might end up forcing you into a corner" type thing.

Okay. Tell you what: Let me write up my interpretation a Mage type build (since that's what I'm familiar with), and I'll go and post it there. If it looks good, then great! I and others can start making more. If not, then we have an example of what not to do.

I can see at least recommendations of skill specialization and professions attached to a race. (Ex; recommending enchanter profession to Elves.)

But that's not how this works because you can cross any character into any specialization.

What really matters is how the rest of your party is specing out so you can work together and have all the things you need without missing stuff.

Like I said, let me write up an example. What I'm trying to give is a starting point - an explanation of some of the essential abilities and how they fit together, and we can fine tune it from there.

A whole series of these made by players would rock socks actually.

As a person new to LARP, but not new to roleplay, D&D/Fantasy, or historical persona play. Having a starting suggestion guide would be awesome. My head is spinning with ideas with little guidance on the website as to were to anchor it. ( the people I have chatted with have been GREAT and very helpful) Just talking about the site its self.
I am in a position were it is a distance to the nearest group, with pretty extreme limitations to my ability to travel. Making the website and information I can get on line very important.

Several of us have been kicking around doing something akin to archtypes, more or less like VTM layouts for their characters. Be very much like this
