I am not sure if garb questions get posted here or not, so if need be move it. Is there anything against "non-modern" camouflage garb? I am thinking of making hooded cloaks that could be worn to let woodland folk blend better with their surroundings.

I've seen real tree camo garb in combination with greens and browns on some NPC bandits. To the best of my knowledge even historically hunters used greens and browns in mock camo to better sneak up on their prey, so go ahead and use what you want! Just keep anything uber modern in moderation.

Walking out in full modern hunting gear? No.

Green and brown clothes, don't see why not.

In all fairness, those bandits were using fabric they could easily get their hands on to make the clothes.

That said, there is long standing tradition, if not history, on your side that anyone spending time in the woods tends toward clothing that will help them be less visible. I don't have the sources at hand, but the modern ghillie suit is attributed to Highland Scot game wardens and I suspect they used something long before the early 1900s that I recall from my looking into the subject.

While not the best video, this guy does identify the best way to "camo" via solid colors and layers over wearing immersion killing modern camo.

This is more what I was thinking. I like the idea above though.

I wouldn't use a shiny fabric, I'd use wool or linen and dip dye sections to get the look that one has. Shiney is not too good. But I'll see what I can come up with once I get my hands on a sewing machine.

Yeah Serena, a dull mottled cloak is exactly what I was thinking.

The shiny isn't great for camouflage, but I dunno...makes it look very elvishy to me.

There's a company that sells an item called a Ranger Cloak. It's a little rich for my tastes, but it is a neat item, like a cross between a poncho and a gilly suit.

Could one use a technique similar to tie-dying, only instead of using trippy psychedelic colors you use a pallet of earthy browns and greens?

That's what Dip dye is, though it's more for gradients. You can up the amount of dye between each dip and lessen the amount of dips to achieve the effects you see in the image above. It's tricky to get the hang of, but it produces an amazing effect. I love it.

Kilrog Gognak used a gilly suit when being introduced as a character before he could talk in our language. He used wildlife calls to talk with and it was hilarious and effective. It's one of my fondest memories of Maywood... must of been 2012. We didn't know if he was an orc or a beast and it added to the awesome. He did a good job of making the gilly suit more medieval which was easy to do and that thing offered a lot of hiding yet was really breathable.

You guys remember the camping return of the jedi? It was basically a big tan or od green poncho with other woodland colors painted on in blotches.

As for medieval hunt gear, you see the hunt colors and black watch versions of clothes and tartans, often in darkened or muted colors.
