Really interesting thought here that my elders and I have been discussing. I am a really big fan of dryads and would love to create one. Folklore wise, a fairy subrace would make sense; however, the racial abilities and costume requirements for an elf fit much better. I'm really thinking pointed ears and leafy with this. Any opinions or ideas?

I was going to go with more leaves, but that's pretty close.

Indir and one of the kids in Australia have been working on lore for wood spirits etc. You should all work together, makes everyone's lore richer and ties the world together without redundency.

Just to be clear, you are suggesting creating a new race instead of building off of an already made one?

I believe what the Kingy is meaning is that they are working on Lore for Wood Spirits and Dryads that is a branch off the Fairies/Fey/Pixies line... which would make a lot of sense!
Therefore you wouldn't need a new race!

To be honest, the Real Life "Lore" on Fairies is Vast... from your simple Fairies to things like Red Caps - that have to bathe their hats in the Blood of their victims or they die...

My confusion lies with the fact that fairy costuming requires wings. If we are changing the costuming, or any of the racial abilities, wouldn't that constitute a new race?

I would say, if the Lore dictates that this particular Fairy/Fey type doesn't have wings, but has Leaves and bark skin, or Must have a Red Cap (Think of what the Smurfs wear, but Red) then that would be the Costume requirement - it would be based on the Lore and that Lore would take precedence as an extension!

Elves were considered fey just like Dryads. Fairy actually comes from the fact that they had fair skin. Maybe they would be more like a hybrid? I just don't see things like Fairy Giggles being a very dryad thing.

I think they were going to use the beast race template but sub plant costume for animal. I'd have to ask to be sure. Right now it's in the "making npc lore" phase iirc.

Our group used 2 different methods for dryads. One was a gullie suit, for a beast character. And the other was very humanoid elfy looking with wigs made of leaves and tree vines that qualified for fairy but also had green skin.

A Google search for Sylvari from Guild Wars 2 will produce lots of interesting images for inspiration for a Dryad/Tradling kit.

In my opinion, it would make more sense to have Dryads as a sub-race of elves, because of things like Elven one with Nature, which would make sense for Dryads since they're so leafy.
Of course, I'm just a newbie, so there might be some complicated reason why this can't happen.

From my experience , yours may very. The larpcraft beast and fey races are a sort of catch all for mythological creatures. Beast race is very open and a lot of popular creatures fit there. As for fey, well larpcraft started with pixies or human sized tinker bells as inspiration I think, but I know at least a few chapters going with the more traditional version of European fey. Elfs in larpcraft tend to be more Tolkieny I think. Dryad doesn't fit thematically in my opinion and also the nature spell in their kit actually used to be an earth spell in the older system.
