The Island of Norrfjell: Legacy of the North

Nestled within the windswept hills and rugged shores of the northern seas lies the island of Norrfjell, a remote and untamed land with a history as enduring as the people who inhabit it. Though Norrfjell’s terrain lacks towering mountains, its hilly landscape and prominent tree, known as The Great Elder, have become symbols of resilience for the humans who call this place home. The name “Norrfjell” means “Northern Hills,” paying homage to the island’s rolling landscape and its remote northern location.

The People of Norrfjell: Guardians of Tradition

In the 3rd Age, a group of human settlers, fleeing the wars and famines of the southern lands, braved the frigid northern waters in search of refuge. Guided by their seers and chieftains, they came upon the shores of Norrfjell, a land with limited resources but vast freedom from the conflicts of their past. The people of Norrfjell, akin to ancient Nordic tribes, developed a nomadic, seafaring lifestyle, relying on the ocean’s bounty and their skilled craftsmanship to thrive in this harsh environment.

Though life on the island is difficult, the Norrfjellians are a hardy people, shaped by the wind and waves. They live in small but resilient villages, the most notable of which are Brambleholt and Greenthorp.

Brambleholt: The Heart of the Sea

Brambleholt, the largest settlement on Norrfjell, sits along the eastern coast and serves as the island’s primary port. With its medium-sized ships and bustling docks, Brambleholt acts as the island’s gateway to the outside world. Traders and seafarers arrive from distant lands, bringing with them much-needed goods in exchange for the fish, furs, and handcrafted wares produced by the people of Norrfjell.

The village’s name, Brambleholt, comes from the dense brambles that once choked the hills surrounding it, cleared away by the first settlers to build their homes. Now, Brambleholt thrives, its docks alive with activity as Norrfjellians prepare their ships for long voyages or welcome foreign traders into their halls.

Greenthorp: The Village of the Great Elder

To the west lies Greenthorp, a village renowned for its proximity to the island’s sacred tree, The Great Elder. This massive, ancient tree stands as a testament to the island’s endurance, its roots twisting deep into the earth. The people of Greenthorp regard the tree as a guardian, offering protection and wisdom. Festivals are often held beneath its boughs, where the village gathers to celebrate the cycles of the seasons.

Greenthorp’s name reflects its lush surroundings, where the hardy greenery that has survived countless winters continues to thrive. Though smaller than Brambleholt, the village is the cultural heart of Norrfjell, where traditions are kept alive, and the wisdom of the elders is passed down through generations.

Ruins of the Past: Voldark and Hargrun

Further north, past the hills and beyond the known settlements, lie the ancient ruins of Voldark and Hargrun. These once-great cities now stand in silence, their stone structures crumbling beneath the weight of time. Little is known of the people who built them, but the legends of Norrfjell speak of a powerful civilization that fell to ruin long before the settlers arrived.

  • Voldark, the Fortress of the North, was once a mighty stronghold, its walls standing tall against invaders. Now, the fortress lies in ruins, its grandeur lost to the ages, but its legacy endures in the stories told around the fires of Norrfjell’s longhouses.
  • Hargrun, an ancient city shrouded in mystery, is said to have been cursed by its own inhabitants. Strange relics are sometimes found in its depths, but the people of Norrfjell rarely venture too close, fearing the remnants of whatever dark magic may still linger within.
These ruins serve as a reminder of the fleeting nature of power and the resilience of those who continue to endure in this unforgiving land.

Norrfjell’s Legacy

Though Norrfjell may not boast vast resources or easy living, the people who dwell here have carved out a life filled with meaning, culture, and honor. Brambleholt’s ships sail proudly across the seas, while Greenthorp’s festivals celebrate the enduring spirit of the island. Even the ruins of Voldark and Hargrun, long abandoned, speak to the island’s deep and storied past.

In the end, Norrfjell stands as a testament to human perseverance—a land where the spirit of the north endures, and the flame of tradition never fades.
